The Town of Ackerman was chartered on February 16, 1884, upon the arrival of the Canton, Aberdeen and Nashville Railroad.
Ackerman was named for the president of the railroad, William K. Ackerman. Ackerman has been the County Seat of Choctaw County since 1896.
As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,594.
The Board of Aldermen meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m.
Board meetings are open to the public for observation and are held at Town Hall on Main Street.
